The label says "2 ml per litre" or "300 ml per acre" – but how much goes in your 16-litre sprayer? Enter the dose from the product label, your tank size and area, and this calculator does the rest. It never suggests a dose; it only does the arithmetic for the one you enter.

About the Pesticide Dilution Calculator

Getting the tank mix right is one of the most important – and most commonly fudged – steps in crop protection. Farmers often measure "one cap" or "one spoon" per tank, or add a little extra "for strength". Both habits cause problems: under-dosing lets pests survive and speeds up resistance, while over-dosing wastes expensive chemical, can burn the crop and leaves residues that affect market access and your own health.

Pesticide labels in India express the dose in one of two ways:

  • Per litre of water (for example 2 ml/L). The amount per tank is simply the dose × tank capacity.
  • Per acre or hectare (for example 300 ml in 200 L of water per acre). Here the amount per tank depends on how much water you spray per acre.

This calculator handles both. It also tells you how many tank fills the job will take and how much product to buy in total, so you don't end up with a half-used bottle – or run out halfway through the field.

Our rule: your label, your dose

We deliberately don't suggest any product or dose. Every pesticide sold legally in India has a label and leaflet approved by the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee (CIB&RC) listing the crops, pests, doses and waiting periods it is approved for. Use that, or the advice of your KVK or agriculture officer.

How to use the Pesticide Dilution Calculator

  1. 1 Choose whether the label gives the dose per litre of water or per acre.
  2. 2 Choose ml or g depending on whether the product is a liquid or a powder.
  3. 3 Enter the dose exactly as written on the label.
  4. 4 Enter your sprayer tank size, the area to spray and the water you use per acre.
  5. 5 Press Calculate. Measure the product per tank with a proper measuring cup or syringe – not a bottle cap.

The formula we use

When the label gives a dose per litre:

Product per tank = Dose per litre × Tank capacity (L)
Total water = Spray volume per acre × Acres
Total product = Dose per litre × Total water
Tank fills = Total water ÷ Tank capacity

When the label gives a dose per acre:

Product per litre = Dose per acre ÷ Spray volume per acre
Product per tank = Product per litre × Tank capacity
Total product = Dose per acre × Acres

Worked example

Dose per litre: the label says 2 ml per litre. You have a 16-litre knapsack sprayer and will spray 2 acres using 200 L of water per acre.

  1. Product per tank = 2 × 16 = 32 ml.
  2. Total water = 200 × 2 = 400 L, so 25 tank fills.
  3. Total product = 2 × 400 = 800 ml.

Dose per acre: the label says 300 ml per acre, and you spray 200 L of water per acre with the same sprayer.

  1. Product per litre = 300 ÷ 200 = 1.5 ml.
  2. Product per tank = 1.5 × 16 = 24 ml.
  3. Total for 2 acres = 300 × 2 = 600 ml.

Things to keep in mind

  • Calibrate your sprayer. The per-acre method only works if you really spray the water volume you entered. Fill the tank with a known volume, spray a measured area at your normal walking speed, and see how much was used.
  • Measure accurately. Use a measuring cylinder, marked cup or disposable syringe. Caps and spoons vary widely.
  • Mixing order. Fill the tank half with clean water, add the measured product, stir, then top up. Check the label before mixing two products together.
  • Waiting period. Note the pre-harvest interval (PHI) on the label and don't harvest before it has passed.
  • Protect yourself. Wear gloves, a mask, full sleeves and eye protection. Don't spray against the wind or in the heat of the day.

Frequently asked questions

How much pesticide should I put in a 16-litre pump?

Multiply the label dose per litre by 16. For a 2 ml/L dose that is 32 ml; for 1.5 ml/L it is 24 ml. If the label gives a dose per acre, divide it by the water per acre first. The calculator above does both.

How do I convert a per-acre dose to per litre?

Divide the dose per acre by the litres of water you spray per acre. 400 ml per acre in 200 L of water is 2 ml per litre.

How many tanks do I need for one acre?

Divide the water per acre by the tank size. At 200 L per acre and a 16 L tank you need 12.5 tank fills per acre.

Can I add a little extra for better results?

No. Using more than the label dose doesn't improve control reliably, but it does increase cost, crop injury risk, residues and resistance. Stick to the label dose.

Does this work for power sprayers and drones?

Yes – enter the tank capacity and the water volume per acre you actually apply. Drone spraying uses much less water per acre (often 10–20 L), so follow product labels approved for drone application.
