Milk, feed and fodder – the numbers that decide dairy profit
In a dairy, feed is usually the biggest cost and milk quality decides the price you are paid. A small change in fat or SNF, or a few kilograms of wasted feed a day, adds up to thousands of rupees over a lactation.

What is SNF in milk?
SNF means solids-not-fat: protein, lactose and minerals. Most cooperatives pay on both fat and SNF, so both affect your price per litre.
How much dry matter does a cow eat?
Roughly 2.5–3.5% of its body weight per day, depending on milk yield. A 400 kg cow giving 10 litres typically eats about 12 kg of dry matter.
