About the Hectare to Acre Converter
Most agricultural research, crop recommendations and government statistics in India are given per hectare, while most farmers think in acres. If a recommendation reads "120 kg N per hectare" or a scheme covers "small farmers with up to 2 hectares", you need to know what that means in acres.
A hectare is 10,000 square metres – a square 100 m on each side. An acre is 4,046.86 square metres. Dividing one by the other:

The formula we use
Acres = Hectares × 2.4710538Rule of thumb: multiply by 2.5 and subtract a little. 4 hectares ≈ 10 acres (exactly 9.88).
Worked example
A research trial reports 1.5 hectares. In acres: 1.5 × 2.4711 = 3.707 acres.
The same factor converts rates the other way: a dose of 120 kg per hectare is 120 ÷ 2.4711 = 48.6 kg per acre.
Things to keep in mind
- When converting a rate (kg per hectare) to kg per acre, you divide by 2.471 – the opposite of converting an area.
- Marginal farmers are defined as having less than 1 hectare (about 2.47 acres) and small farmers 1–2 hectares (about 2.47–4.94 acres) in Indian agricultural statistics.
