Acre vs Hectare: How They Compare and How to Convert Without Mistakes

In India you'll hear land described in acres at the village chaupal, in hectares in government schemes and research reports, and in bigha, guntha or kanal in the land records of some states. Acres and hectares are the two you'll need most often, and moving between them is simple – as long as you remember one trap involving rates.

How big are they?

• 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² = 43,560 sq ft. A square acre is about 63.6 m (208.7 ft) on each side.

• 1 hectare = 10,000 m² – a square 100 m on each side, roughly the size of a large football ground.

So a hectare is about two and a half times the size of an acre:

1 hectare = 2.4711 acres
1 acre = 0.4047 hectare

Converting areas

• Acres → hectares: multiply by 0.4047 (roughly 0.4).

• Hectares → acres: multiply by 2.4711 (roughly 2.5).

The trap: converting rates goes the other way

A rate – kg per hectare, quintals per acre, litres per hectare – is an amount divided by an area. Because a hectare is bigger, the same dose per hectare is a bigger number than per acre.

kg per acre = kg per hectare ÷ 2.4711
kg per hectare = kg per acre × 2.4711

So a recommendation of 120 kg N per hectare is 120 ÷ 2.4711 = 48.6 kg N per acre – not 120 × 2.4711.

The same logic applies to yields. 50 quintals per hectare = 20.2 quintals per acre.

If you remember just one thing: areas multiply by 2.47 going from hectares to acres; rates divide by 2.47.
