About the Tractor Diesel Consumption Calculator

A diesel engine burns fuel in proportion to the work it does. A tractor pulling a rotavator through heavy soil works close to full power; the same tractor pulling a seed drill uses less than half. That is why "litres per hour" alone doesn't tell you much – you need the operation and the work rate too.

This calculator uses the standard engineering estimate:

  • A modern diesel engine burns about 0.27 litres per kWh of work it delivers.
  • The load factor is the share of full power the operation uses – about 0.8 for rotavating, 0.6 for cultivating and 0.35–0.45 for light work.
  • Dividing litres per hour by acres per hour gives litres per acre, the figure that matters for your costs.

Use it to compare operations, budget diesel for the season, or check whether a custom-hire rate is fair.

The formula we use

Diesel (L/h) = Tractor power (kW) × 0.27 × Load factor
Diesel (L/acre) = Diesel (L/h) ÷ Acres per hour
Fuel cost = Diesel (L) × Price per litre

1 HP = 0.746 kW. The 0.27 L/kWh figure is a typical specific fuel consumption for tractor diesel engines working under load.

Worked example

A 45 HP tractor with a cultivator covers 1 acre per hour. You have 5 acres and diesel costs ₹90 a litre.

  1. Power = 45 × 0.746 = 33.6 kW.
  2. Diesel per hour = 33.6 × 0.27 × 0.6 = 5.44 L/h.
  3. Diesel per acre = 5.44 ÷ 1 = 5.44 L.
  4. For 5 acres: 27.2 L, costing about ₹2,448.

Things to keep in mind

  • Soil moisture changes everything. Dry, hard soil can raise fuel use by 20–30%; working at the right moisture saves diesel.
  • Right gear, right throttle. For light work, a higher gear at reduced throttle ("gear up, throttle down") cuts diesel noticeably.
  • Keep tyres and filters in order. Wrong tyre pressure and clogged air filters waste fuel.
  • Measure your own figure. Fill the tank to the brim, work a known area, then refill: that is your real litres per acre.
